St Andrews Golf Courses

Fife boasts many of the best golf courses in Scotland, including the world-famous Old Course at St Andrews. In fact there are no fewer than 45 different Golf Courses in Fife making St Andrews the spiritual and cultural home of Golf.

St Andrews is the home of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club and the home of golf. There are six centrally located golf courses in St Andrews, each with its individual character providing enjoyment for golfers of all standards. There are now also championship Golf Courses at St Andrews Bay - in the form of the Torrance Course and the Devlin Golf Course with future plans for more golf courses in the near future.

St Andrews Golf Courses- The New Course

The New Course was the second golf course to be constructed at St Andrews and was named "The New" simply to differentiate it from the existing course "The Old", now over 100 years old, the New Course, St Andrews is probably the oldest "new" course in the world.

Opened in April 1895, the R&A used an Edinburgh civil engineer to design the New Course, and entrusted the layout to "Old" Tom Morris and his right-hand man David Honeyman.

The result was a classic links golf course which uses the natural features of the land to create a first class golfing challenge. The New Course has the traditional out and back layout. In the great St Andrews Golf Course tradition, the New Course also has shared fairways and even a double green at the 3rd and 15th holes.

St Andrews Golf Courses - The Jubilee Course

Created on a narrow strip of land between the New Course and the sea, the Jubilee Course was originally a 12 hole golf course intended for ladies and beginners. In 1905 the Jubilee Golf Course was converted to 18 holes at a cost of £150.

In 1988 the re-design of the Jubilee to championship standard was carried out by Donald Steel of Cotton, Pennink, Steel & Partners, golf course architects. The teeing grounds were raised, not only providing wonderful views of the Links, but also exposing the golfers to the winds which sweep in from the bay. Mr. Steel's redesigned course was 6,805 yards and a real test for all golfers.

St Andrews Golf Courses- The Dukes Course

The Dukes Golf Course, St Andrews is a Championship standard golf course designed by Peter Thomson, five-times Open Champion. The Dukes is set inland from the other St Andrews course and the layout is situated two miles inland at Craigtoun Park.

The rolling fairways and undulating greens are always in excellent condition and the clubhouse has been designed to the luxurious standards of a five star resort. It is a welcoming haven, offering hospitality in the best Scottish tradition.

St Andrews Golf Courses - The Eden Course

By the year 1913 the pressure for play on the Old, New and Jubilee courses was such that a fourth course was required. Opened for play in 1914, the Eden course was designed by Harry S. Colt, internationally renowned for his course design skills. His use of the natural features and of the partially buried field boundary walls the course has an entirely natural feel.
